Mikel Arteta has called on the Premier League to increase squad sizes as the Arsenal boss lost another two key players through injury gaming
Both Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey face “a few weeks” on the sidelines after Arteta confirmed the pair have suffered setbacks gaming
Arsenal, who remain unbeaten in the league so far this season, host winless Sheffield United on Saturday but Jesus will miss out with a hamstring issue suffered in the midweek Champions League win at Sevilla gaming
Partey is absent having pulled up in training with a muscular injury which the PA news agency understands could rule him out until December gaming
Arteta has already been without a host of players for periods of the campaign with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard needing treatment while summer signing Jurrien Timber is a long-term absentee following knee surgery gaming
Arteta has often criticised gaming footballing authorities for the number of fixtures in the calendar but, with that particular cork out of the bottle, he feels the solution could now lie in the Premier League expanding squad sizes beyond the current limit of 25 gaming
“If we have more games, more competitiveness and physically the standards are higher – by playing more minutes – we have to do that or instead of five subs, we have 10,” he said when asked about increasing squad sizes gaming
“The five subs is now something normal but it was a big fight to go from three to five gaming
I cannot imagine the game in the conditions we are in today after last year and the World Cup without five subs, it would be so difficult gaming
“If the calendar extends, for sure we would have to think of not dropping the quality gaming
The only way to do it is players have to have certain availability and you need players to pick gaming
”“When is this going to stop and how long will it take for us to make the right decisions? The laws will change and probably our capacity to do things during games will change as well gaming
We will have to adapt, for sure gaming
“We will need more players gaming
The players have a certain amount of energy gaming
The battery lasts so long and we will burn them gaming
We will need more players if that’s the case gaming
We have to adapt gaming
We try to manage every single thing to control it, but there are things that are difficult to do and we have to accept thatMikel Arteta“There are periods sometimes where you get really unlucky, and sometimes things that are really difficult to prevent gaming
When you are loading players more and there are players who haven’t done it in the past that risk increases gaming
“We try to manage every single thing to control it, but there are things that are difficult to do and we have to accept that gaming
”Martin Odegaard is available and, despite being substituted in the last two games, Arteta is backing his captain to come good gaming
Asked about recent criticism of Odegaard’s performances, Arteta said: “(It’s because) he’s an incredible player and he’s doing so much for us gaming
“He’s our captain gaming
We expect him to step in all the time like with the other players, and this is great because that’s the role that he has gaming
“We have developed him into that player, that person, and now it’s about maintaining and sustaining that level gaming
That’s the challenge gaming

Pep Guardiola has admitted the demands of winning the treble did take a toll on his Manchester City players gaming
City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup and suffered rare back-to-back Premier League defeats prior to the recent international break gaming
They got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday but Guardiola concedes there has been a natural drop in intensity after the remarkable end to last season gaming
The City manager said: “The treble had an influence on all of us, me included gaming
“So now we need to be there, close, month by month, to arrive in the final decision moments at the end of the season close to the opponents to try it again gaming
“I said many times, no-one has won four (Premier Leagues) in a row, never ever gaming
That shows how difficult it is, but now it’s important to be there, especially in the Champions League, qualify for the next round in this period and after we can just focus on the Premier League gaming
That is the target gaming
”City’s success has also brought increased expectations, particularly on Erling Haaland, who scored a remarkable 52 goals in an outstanding first season at the club last term gaming
By his extraordinary standards, the Norwegian’s recent three-game run without a goal constituted a barren spell but he ended that ‘drought’ with a clinical strike against the Seagulls gaming
“Yes the expectations are so high but he’s handled it really well,” said Guardiola gaming
“He knows he could have scored even more goals in the nine Premier League games we have played gaming
”Guardiola rested goalkeeper Ederson at the weekend following the Brazilian’s exertions during the international break gaming
Stefan Ortega took his place gaming
Guardiola said: “It was just for the fact that the travel from Brazil, it’s a long time gaming
Of course it’s happened many times but he played two games there and he was so so tired gaming
“Normally I like to play Ortega in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup but we are out of the Carabao Cup, and sometimes it’s good for Eddy to rest a bit and refresh the mind gaming
”Ortega was pleased to get the opportunity and hopes there will be plenty more gaming
The German said: “I was excited when Pep told me that I was starting gaming
I’m always waiting to get a chance to get a bit more game time gaming
“Eddy is playing really well this season, he started really good, but I try to keep pushing him every day in training sessions gaming
“I think I deserved to start gaming
I’m ambitious so of course I’m not happy to sit on the bench, but we are in a team gaming
“Sometimes it is tough but this is my job – to be there when the team needs me and to keep pushing Eddy every day gaming
