Bongi Mbonambi is free to play in the Rugby World Cup final after World Rugby confirmed there is “insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges” after he was investigated for an alleged racial slur during the semi-final win over England baccarat
England flanker Tom Curry alleged that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during the defeat in Paris on Saturday evening, as South Africa edged to a dramatic 16-15 victory baccarat
After 23 minutes at the Stade de France, Curry could be heard on the referee’s microphone alerting official Ben O’Keeffe to a comment possibly made by Mbonambi at a ruck baccarat
“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe baccarat
“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment baccarat
The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast baccarat
Following an investigation, World Rugby released a statement saying they won’t proceed with charges and that “the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light”, which freed the path for Mbonambi to be selected as the Springboks’ starting hooker for Saturday evening’s clash with New Zealand baccarat
The statement said: “World Rugby has undertaken a review of allegations made by England’s Tom Curry in relation to the use of discriminatory language by South Africa’s Mbongeni Mbonambi during the England versus South Africa Rugby World Cup 2023 semi-final on Saturday, along with a further allegation brought forward in recent days about a previous match in the Autumn Nations Series 2022 baccarat
“Any allegation of discrimination is taken extremely seriously by World Rugby, warranting a thorough investigation baccarat
Having considered all the available evidence, including match footage, audio and evidence from both teams, the governing body has determined that there is insufficient evidence at this time to proceed with charges baccarat
Therefore, the matter is deemed closed unless additional evidence comes to light baccarat
“It is important to note that World Rugby accepts that Tom Curry made the allegations in good faith, and that there is no suggestion that the allegation was deliberately false or malicious baccarat
”Tom Curry made the allegation during England’s World Cup semi-final defeat (PA Wire)Curry had been the target of threats on social media after the allegations, with his club Sale Sharks saying they were “absolutely appalled” by the “nature and level” of abuse, while England captain Owen Farrell also slammed those sending the flanker abuse baccarat
Despite the threats, Curry has been selected in the England team to take on Argentina in the bronze final on Friday evening and World Rugby also addressed this aspect of the situation in their statement baccarat
They wrote: “World Rugby is also concerned by the social media abuse that both players have been subjected to this week baccarat
There is no place in rugby or society for discrimination, abuse or hate speech, and World Rugby urges fans to embrace the sport’s values of respect, integrity and solidarity baccarat
”South Africa captain Siya Kolisi confirmed that he had reached out to Curry and condemned the baccarat online abuse received baccarat
“If it’s a player, coach or referee, I don’t support that and I feel for him,” said Kolisi in the team announcement press conference baccarat
“I have spoken to him, I sent him a message when I saw that was going on because he’s somebody that I respect and I’ve played against for quite a while baccarat
“I’ve been through it too baccarat
We can take it as players when it comes to us directly but when it comes to your family, it’s totally different baccarat
That’s exactly what he said to me, it’s really hard when it comes to your family baccarat
That’s the one part of the game we really don’t enjoy – we don’t mind being criticised for how we play on the field but when it becomes personal baccarat

“We’ve experienced it too baccarat
Cobus [Reinach] and his family received death threats earlier this tournament baccarat
As a rugby family, as much as we compete, we do support each other when things like this happen baccarat
”Siya Kolisi confirmed he had reached out to Tom Curry (Getty Images)The RFU also released a statement following World Rugby’s confirmation that they wouldn’t press charges and said they were “deeply disappointed” by the decision baccarat
“The RFU fully support Tom Curry in raising the racially abusive behaviour he experienced whilst playing for England against South Africa,” said the statement baccarat
“During the match baccarat between England and South Africa on Saturday 21st October 2023, Tom Curry reported to the referee that he had been racially abused by Mbongeni Mbonambi baccarat
The subsequent World Rugby investigation was informed by Tom Curry that he had also been the victim of the same abuse, from the same player, in the Autumn Test 2022 baccarat
“World Rugby have today announced their decision not to bring charges in respect of either incident baccarat
The RFU are deeply disappointed by the decision taken by World Rugby baccarat
The decision not to put the evidence before an independent disciplinary panel has denied the disciplinary process the opportunity to hear Tom Curry’s voice and to independently assess his account of these serious events, together with the other available evidence baccarat
“In their continued full support of Tom, the RFU together with the England squad, condemn the disgusting abuse he and his family have received on social media as a result of his having had the courage to put unacceptable behaviour that has no place in society or on the rugby field, in the public eye baccarat

Not always in sport do you get a shot at redemption and successfully taking advantage of that opportunity is even rarer baccarat
England’s pack, and their front row in particular, will have had four years of sleepless nights about that early November evening in 2019 baccarat
In the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, England were decimated by South Africa’s power up front, as the brilliance of a scintillating semi-final win over New Zealand was quickly replaced by the humiliation of a 32-12 thumping baccarat
The Springboks, then as now, pride themselves on their physicality and brutality at the breakdown, the set-piece and in open play baccarat
Yet on a rainy night in Paris four years on, England’s pack fronted up, set the platform in a thrilling World Cup semi-final and earned their redemption arc baccarat
Yet it still wasn’t enough baccarat
This time, albeit by one point rather than 20, the result was the same – England’s players slumped on the turf in despair while their opponents revelled in victory baccarat
The Springbok celebrations were more muted this time, understandably so given there is one more crucial match against the All Blacks standing baccarat between them and their ultimate goal, but the English heartbreak was the same, even if the journey to get there was vastly different baccarat
In Yokohama, South Africa won a scarcely believable 11 scrums to England’s three, including six scrum penalties, as the English eight were splintered time and again baccarat
Dan Cole became the fall guy for that embarrassment – the tighthead prop, supposedly renowned for his scrummaging, forced to play 77 minutes after Kyle Sinckler’s early injury and being obliterated by the combination of Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira and Steven Kitshoff baccarat
The fact that Cole and Joe Marler, who came off the bench early in the second half that day, were selected by Steve Borthwick to start this revenge game precisely because of their scrum prowess will have surely given them a surge of confidence baccarat
And the fact they not only survived, but thrived, in the front row this time around will have been sheer vindication baccarat
Borthwick entrusted the duo to paint an early picture of scrum parity to referee Ben O’Keeffe and they delivered, providing the base that led to multiple first-half penalties from the trusty boot of Owen Farrell baccarat
Cole and Marler helped ensure scrum parity early on but that faded once the replacements came on (AFP via Getty Images)However, as the game wore on, Borthwick’s decision started to become prescient for the wrong reasons baccarat
As Sinckler and Ellis Genge came on as prop replacements, the Springboks own bomb squad from the bench – led by Ox Nche and Vincent Koch – started to dominate at scrum-time baccarat
Each engagement started to become eerily reminiscent of 2019 and it was eventually a scrum penalty on halfway that led to Handre Pollard’s decisive, game-winning three-pointer with two minutes to go baccarat
It felt almost unfair on England’s big men given that the pack, as a whole, had more than held their own in other facets baccarat
Of the 13 England forwards who played some part in that 2019 final, eight appeared in this last-four clash and stamped their mark all over a first half that was by far England’s best 40 minutes under Borthwick baccarat
Maro Itoje was a lineout fiend, stealing a Springboks throw-in on halfway and putting doubt in the head of Bongi Mbonambi, whose crooked throw in his own 22 gave Farrell his first penalty goal of the day baccarat
A new face from four years, George Martin, justified his surprise second-row selection ahead of incumbent Ollie Chessum on just his fourth Test start as he brilliantly marshalled England’s maul defence baccarat
If Boks lock Eben Etzebaccarat beth is world rugby’s best maul disruptor, then he may have witnessed first-hand the emergence of a new challenger to that crown baccarat
Martin caused havoc as England improbably won three consecutive maul turnovers from attacking South African lineouts in the first half to frustrate their much-fancied opponents baccarat
Pollard ultimately kicked the winning penalty, from a scrum infringement (PA Wire)The celebrations from the likes of Itoje, Jamie George and Ben Earl as those penalties and free-kicks were earned by the pack showed just how important this part of the gameplan was baccarat
It began putting clear doubt in Springbok minds, as the worried tone from skipper Siya Kolisi when he discussed matter with referee O’Keeffe baccarat betrayed baccarat
The English tactic of throwing bodies in to contest every ruck relied on the diesel engines of the forwards and they delivered by dominating collisions and allowing the aerial bombardment strategy that followed to be effective baccarat
But ultimately, despite a gameplan executed as well as it possibly could have been, the gap in quality baccarat between the sides proved too much to overcome baccarat
South Africa adjusted, Pollard came on for Manie Libbok to dictate proceedings with his metronomic boot and English heartbreak ensued baccarat
There was no shame in a one-point defeat from a semi-final that was much closer than most expected and England’s pack should feel redeemed from the nightmare of 2019 baccarat
But that won’t make this semi-final hurt any less baccarat
Perhaps 2027 will give them an opportunity to avenge a new pain baccarat
